Week of 4/20: Lesson Description:
This week we are working on Immigration and Urbanization in the United States.
Learner Outcomes: unit description, “In this unit…students will learn….”
In this unit, we address the immigration patterns during the late 19th and early 20th century and its impact on the United States. In addition, we address how urbanization in the late 19th century influenced reforms within the U.S. We also analyze the impact immigration has on the United States today economically, politically and socially.

Standards
- T1S1E: Analyze the causes and consequences of a specific problem in United States’ history post c. 1870 as well as the challenges and opportunities faced by those trying to address the problem.
- T2S3A: Evaluate the causes, patterns, and outcomes of internal migrations and urbanization.
- T5S4C: Describe the consequences, both intended and unintended, of government policies to improve individual and societal conditions.
The assignments for this week are as follows:
- Do Now: Access the American History Chapter 7 Power-Point on Teams or by clicking here and answer the Do Now Question on slide #177. (Do Now=10 pts.)
- An Immigrant's Experience Ellis Island Webquest: In order to gain a better understanding of the difficulties faced by newcomers to a foreign culture, you are going to develop a poem based on an imagined immigrant experience. Imagine what it would be like to be an immigrant. Describe your feelings and observations and the challenges of being a newcomer. You may describe such experiences as: difficulties of the journey to the U.S. (traveling to the U.S. and seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time); going through the inspections (i.e. Ellis Island or Angel Island); experiences once admitted to the country (challenges that were faced w/nativism); immigration restrictions; and life in the cities as an immigrant.
- You must include this in your poem: (1) Imagery-the use of vivid or figurative language to represent objects, actions or ideas and (2) Mood-the feeling or atmosphere that an author creates in a story or poem. Click here for the project sheet. You will need to complete the "An Immigrant's Experience Poem Draft" assignment first (click here). - All assignments are due by Sunday at 11:59 pm. Submit work through Teams by sending a digital copy of typed out work or by taking a picture of finished work .
