Week of 4/13: Lesson Description:
This week we are working on Immigration and Urbanization in the United States.
Learner Outcomes: unit description, “In this unit…students will learn….”
In this unit, we address the immigration patterns during the late 19th and early 20th century and its impact on the United States. In addition, we address how urbanization in the late 19th century influenced reforms within the U.S. We also analyze the impact immigration has on the United States today economically, politically and socially.

In this unit, we address the immigration patterns during the late 19th and early 20th century and its impact on the United States. In addition, we address how urbanization in the late 19th century influenced reforms within the U.S. We also analyze the impact immigration has on the United States today economically, politically and socially.
Standards
- T1S1E: Analyze the causes and consequences of a specific problem in United States’ history post c. 1870 as well as the challenges and opportunities faced by those trying to address the problem.
- T2S3A: Evaluate the causes, patterns, and outcomes of internal migrations and urbanization.
- T5S4C: Describe the consequences, both intended and unintended, of government policies to improve individual and societal conditions.
The assignments for this week are as follows:
- Chapter 7 Notes: Access the American History Chapter 7 Power-Point on Teams or by clicking here and read through slides: 149-176 and take notes for Chapter 7 Section 3 (1-11). Answer the Do Now Question on slide #147. (Do Now=10 pts.)
- Ellis Island Webquest: Complete "An Immigrant's Experience Ellis Island Webquest". This assignment can be accessed on Teams or by clicking here. You can also access the Ellis Island Webquest by clicking here. (Webquest=42 pts.)
- Political Cartoon Noticings and Wonderings Assignment: Click here to download the assignment.
- Writing prompt on Besty Devos, patronage and the "spoils system": Here we look at the "spoils system" and the act of patronage in government. President Trump nominated Betsy Devos to serve as the Secretary of Education overseeing all federal funding and legislation for the public school systems. Watch these videos showing clips of her confirmation hearing where she is questioned by politicians and determine if you think she is qualified for the job.
- Click here to watch brief clips of Devos's confirmation hearing by the Washington Post. There is also a video clip (click here) where Senator Al Franken questions Devos on her opinion of student proficiency vs. growth when referring to standardized testing. Then watch this short video clip (click here) to see how Senator Elizabeth Warren challenges the qualifications of Besty Devos as a qualified candidate for Secretary of Education. Then answer the questions. Click here to download the assignment.
